True Metal

Metal of Death Zine

Rock Music Critic
Listen up children, today's lesson is in persistence. Nothing good in life comes quickly or easy and Brazilian thrash band Prophecy are a perfect example. Formed in 1985 under the name Biblia Negra the band was (and still is) heavily influenced by the Bay Area thrash scene – Metallica, Vio-lence, Forbidden and particularly Testament and Exodus (if you look closely at the album cover you will see the guy is wearing a “Bonded by Blood” shirt). These guys are some thrashers after my own heart. I think this was probably the greatest scene in metal, but I'm biased by having been young and impressionable while it was going on.

After five years as Biblia Negra and singing in Portuguese the band decided to change their name to Prophecy and sing in English. Since then they've made demos, played shows (including a gig opening for Exodus) and suffered from lineup changes and setbacks. “Never say die” must be these guys motto because through it all they continued to push forward. Finally, in 2008 they were able to record their debut “Legions of Violence” on Morbid Tales Records. The album is now being re-released by Mexican label EBM Records (the same label that gave us Armor Column earlier in the week.)

So they finally put out an album, well what's it sound like? Sounds like bliss to me. It's like I just hopped out of a time machine into 1987 San Francisco and headed straight for a metal show. The music is so very 80s thrash and the vocals are powerful with a slight edge. I definitely hear some Chuck Billy in the vocals.

The production of the album is good, but also on par with what you'd expect from the period to which they pay tribute. So while everything is nice and clear, there isn't a whole lot of low-end in the sound. Given the style I have no complaints whatsoever about that lack of low-end; good thrash don't need no stinkin' low-end, it's sharp like a razor.

I don't think it will surprise you to learn that I really like this album. I've got a sweet-tooth for Bay Area style thrash and this album plays right to my weakness. There's a fair amount of retro thrash going on these days but a lot of it isn't quite as authentic sounding as “Legions of Violence.” I hope these guys are hard at work on their next album because I am ready for another round. Check them out !

Metal CD Ratings

If patience is a virtue, Prophecy's Rogério Avlis must be in line for sainthood. You know, sandpaper-throated, leather clad sainthood. It sometimes take a while for a band to get their debut out, but after forming in 1988 and struggling through various line-up problems, it has taken Avlis no less than 2 decades to finally release a full-length CD.

You math wizards out there will no doubt be scratching your heads in puzzlement of course, and its true ‘Legions of violence' was actually released back in 2008, but was earlier this year given a dusting down and re-issue by Mexican label Endless Brutality of Men as part of their recent intercontinental thrash assault.

The era the band was founded in is very much the one they belong to, and Avlis has weathered the many years since with very little of the trends that have come and gone since affecting the feel of the music. Despite sounding like they would be more at home in the Bay Area than the wilds of their homeland, Prophecy are a distinctly 80s prospect, and sound very much like a hardy survivor than a modern day throwback.

With that said, originality is at a premium on ‘Legions of violence', but the end result is still more than satisfactory as Prophecy cook up a nice mixture of influences that makes up for its lack of inventiveness with a batch of songs that have a healthy amount of energy and variety.

At times the comparisons to classic thrash acts are a little too apparent, but on the whole they mix things up cleverly enough that the CD doesn't sound like the work of a glorified tribute act. Rather than shamelessly aping a single band, Prophecy cherry pick little facets of each band and deliver a mixed batch of songs that vary from short explosions of anger to more developed and musically complex offerings.

Avlis' voice is fairly versatile as well, generally a raspy bark reminiscent of a less nasally Zetro Souza, but with a few little unexpected bonuses along the way that shakes things up a bit. Occasionally some Hetfield-isms (in other words, adding “-ay” to the ends of words) that are a little too on-the-nose crop up, but the biggest surprise comes on the highly Forbidden-influenced “Evilution” where Avlis suddenly soars like Russ Anderson at his mighty best on the massive melodic chorus.

Persistent gang vocals punctuate the songs frequently, often just as little exclamation marks on the choruses, but on certain songs like “Paradigmatic reality” play a massive role in the song overall, adding a nice little bit of extra violence to the mix. “Risen from hell” is one of the more modern sounding songs present, featuring some effective backing growls on the chorus and sneering vocals that call to mind post-reunion Onslaught, though since ‘Legions of violence' first saw light of day only a year and a half after ‘Killing peace' it can probably be chalked up to coincidence.

Compared to short sharp shocks like that, the instrumental “Nameless” seems all the more elegant, as it switches back and forth between soft acoustic noodling and thudding chords before ripping into high gear and showing up some of the best examples of lead guitar on the CD.

It isn't all plain sailing – “Agony within” for instance is the only song that succumbs to a bit of dull groove metal, not really being overly offensive but definitely wearing out its welcome by it's conclusion – but ‘Legions of violence' is at the end of the day a very listenable CD. It's fairly easy for a band to make a strong early impression but then swiftly fall off the radar after a few weeks or months, but this is a CD that has been carefully crafted by a crew of experienced musicians to keep sounding lively and fresh enough to not be so easily forgotten.

3.5/5

Lords of Metal
Under the moniker of ‘The Thrash Is Back Series, The New Forces In Thrash Metal' EBM Records gives us again an opportunity to get to know the Brazilians of Prophecy. I say again, because the offspring of this band is already dated around 1985 and this ‘Legions Of Violence' was already released a couple of years ago via Morbid Tales Records. EBM has dusted of the album, put it in a nice sleeve and added two demo tracks as bonus to it as well.

Easily notable about ‘Legions Of Violence' is the high amount of Bay Area metal that is in it. You would not expect four Brazilians behind this! The guitars and riffs sound like Exodus. Singer Rogerio has listened very carefully to Chuck Billy from Testament and also the backing vocals do fit into this San Francisco styled piece of work. Furthermore Forbidden seemed to be an influence for ‘Evilution' and the instrumental ‘Nameless' brings me back to the atmosphere of Metallica's ‘Ride The Lightning'. Prophecy is not afraid to show us where their metal heart is ticking for, and there is nothing wrong with that. The band also knows what the difference is between using influences and shameless copy / paste music. Prophecies songs are sounding recognizable and common, but with a touch of its own in it as well. The music is played very decently but sometimes the mid tempo parts are a bit too long. Because of this the album is sometimes a bit too slow and therefore it misses out of some extra power here and there. After a couple of listening sessions I get the feeling that ‘Legions Of Violence' is absolutely not bad at all but just a bit too standard every now and then. It is no must have album or an upcoming classic, but on the other hand it must also be said that we have piles of album here at Lords Of Metal whom are less interesting. Bay Area metal disciples can check this one out. It won't hurt.
