Metallized

Lords of Metal

This ‘Religion Blindness' CD by the Portuguese Prayers Of Sanity is actually a rather standard album, and yet it is also an album that tickles my interest a lot. So, how is this possible then?

Let's start with the description of standard first. The sound of ‘Religion Blindness' is normaal. The songs are all written according to the most common structure there is in thrash metal and the result of this is that those of you who are familiar with this type of music can hear the breaks, riffs and faster parts already before they have even arrived. Besides this the decent voice from Tiao only shows some weakness during the semi ballad ‘Shards Of Evil' and so these eight tracks (firty five minutes of music) are all very much done according to the unwritten rules of thrash metal.

But what is so interesting about an average album then? Well, the songs from ‘Religion Blindness' are very well performed by the band. These four men play very tight and fanatically. The dark but still normal sounding vocals from Tiao fits in just fine and the solos are sharp. I can't point out at some mistakes and if you listen to a track like the crushing one ‘Evil May Die' or ‘Something Kills You All' you will also admit that this album is just fine.

Rating: 78/100

Stereokiller

The 3rd installment of EBM Record's Thrash is Back series. Like the first 2, this is more typical thrash rehash. Forming about 5 years ago, they say they want to show people "that thrash still lives." Like the other EBM thrash bands, these guys seem to be the better of the group.

Their sound is still blatantly rehashing the classic 80s bands, but their musicianship seems to be tighter than most doing it. They also have a certain level of energy that simply cannot be ignored. They also seem to at least be trying to not sound completely dated as they pay homage to their favorite bands.

They mix in what you'd expect, Slayer, Metallica, Exodus, etc. The modern sound shows up in some of the more chuggy parts. I even hear some Iced Earth in there, this is especially true for the vocals on the ballad. Religion Blindness was better than I was expecting once I found out what these guys are. The awful cover art didn't help either, but after actually listening to the whole album it wasn't a terrible time.
