Questo è il caso di dirlo: duri e puri. Questo è quel che sono i lucchesi Violentor , Old School Thrash band arrivata con “ Rot ” al secondo album, rilasciato, come il precedente “Violentor”, dall'etichetta messicana "EBM Records", sempre attenta per quanto riguarda l'underground Thrash Metal.
Manco a dirlo, il disco dei Violentor risulta essere estremamente ruvido, con riff graffianti e una sezione ritmica che martella dal primo all'ultimo istante, il tutto condito dalla voce “lemmystica” (mi si passi il neologismo) del chitarrista Dog. Possiamo riassumere “ Rot ” come 35 minuti di mazzate, ma sarebbe fin troppo riduttivo. Il disco suona volutamente grezzo, con una produzione più sporca rispetto a quanto si è ormai abituati ad ascoltare e lascia ben poco spazio a tecnicismi e melodie: il trio toscano ha il solo compito di sparare delle ripetute mattonate alla bocca dello stomaco, e per quanto mi riguarda ci riesce benissimo. Sfido chiunque, ad esempio, a restare completamente immobile ascoltando “ Better Dead Than Slave ” oppure “ Free Spree ”, o ancora “ Rabid Dog ” o la martellante “ Fuck the World ”.
Insomma, se volete semplicemente ascoltare un album per il piacere d'ascoltarlo, senza star troppo a pensare alla tecnica o amenità simili, “ Rot ” dei Violentor è il disco per voi. E sarebbe anche un premio per una band che rispecchia in pieno la visione di sangue e sudore che una band underground ci mette per portare avanti il proprio discorso: meritano supporto totale. E incondizionato. |

| Dopo un anno dal loro debutto, gli italiani Violentor, sfornano il loro secondo full-lenght: "Rot". E' difficile rimanere obiettivi in quanto un appassionato della vecchia scuola potrebbe ritenere quest'album un autentico capolavoro, dato che contiene al suo interno tutti i canoni del thrash metal ottantiano. Esiste, però, l'altra faccia della medaglia.
Un ricercatore di musica di qualità dovrà tenersi alla larga da queste tracce, poiché finirà per annoiarsi dopo pochi minuti di ascolto. I riff isterici fanno muovere le teste in non pochi passaggi i quali, in sede live, non possono che fare vittime, però la tracklist risulta ripetitiva e banale. Dopo questa "premessa" possiamo dire che "Rot" possiede un alto tasso di riff grezzi, intensi ed accattivanti. I toscani riprendono esattamente da dove ci hanno lasciato con il loro marcio debutto punk/thrash. "Perchè cambiare la formula se essa funziona così dannatamente bene?"
Canzoni come "Free Spree" e "Daemonical Tutor" non solo esaltano le doti del batterista, ma sono pezzi che riportano alla mente i mitici Raw Power mentre, "Voodoo", si presenta come uno degli episodi più ispirati ed eccitanti. Altra traccia degna di nota è "Breath of Hate" che, grazie al suo intermezzo lento, ci offre una dinamica del pezzo davvero piacevole. Il finale è affidato a "The Last Sentence" che esce un pò fuori dai canoni della band fin qui proposti, molto più lenta e con una vena thrash maggiore rispetto alle tracce precedenti.
Non è difficile accorgersi della piattezza che emerge da queste canzoni, identiche e standardizzate e, per quanto coinvolgenti e cariche di energia possano essere le composizioni dei thrashers tricolori, difficilmente sono distinguibili tra loro. Anche il riffing, dopo qualche canzone inizia a spegnersi drasticamente nella monotonia. Non sarà un capolavoro, ma sarà un album che farà felici tutti coloro che amano la musica grezza, ruvida e senza compromessi.

Per esprimere cosa penso di questo secondo full length dei lucchesi Violentor, uscito per la rinomata EBM Records e proponente 9 tracce di speed thrash metal molto in your face, orientato verso il punk e con una registrazione dal feeling molto analogico e quindi largamente apprezzabile, vi racconterò un episodio. L'anno scorso capitò l'opportunità di vederli a Tortoreto; prima di quello avevo solo sentito alcune tracce sfuse da youtube e mi sembravano in gamba, ma il loro concerto mostrò una band che nonostante le buone capacità tecniche sembrava suonare all'infinito brani tipo Motorhead più diretti e ignoranti e che sapesse fare poco o nient'altro.
Bene: l'ascolto del disco conferma questa mia impressione. Singolarmente presi, i brani sono più che soddisfacenti, ma “Rot” complessivamente è paurosamente monocorde, omogeneo, monotono, monodirezionale e monocromatico, con 9 brani talmente fissati con lo stile “speed thrash con 4 accordi a corda libera” che sono praticamente tutti la stessa cosa e che alla fine risultano quasi del tutto indistinguibili tra di loro. Direte voi: e basta? Più o meno sì. certo, ci sta qualche rallentamento ogni tanto (3 in tutto l'album), e alcuni episodi come “Voodoo” e la title track si erigono dalla media, nonché alcuni assoli degni di nota, ma è tutto qua. Il resto dei brani non è sciatto ma direi approssimativo e superficiale, senza dei riffs di chitarra particolarmente originali, senza passaggi di batteria degni di nota (proprio per questo il disco lo sento orientato verso il punk), senza idee particolari riproposte, e basta. A salvare questa band dal baratro della bocciatura per me ci stanno solo due elementi: l'ostinazione sonora, che fa sì che il disco sia quantomeno roccioso e ostinato, e il fatto che il disco, come detto sopra, pur non avendo particolari guizzi o idee interessanti, presenta almeno delle tracce che singolarmente convincono, fatti salvi elementi come il rallentamento poco coinvolgente di “Breath of hate” e una certa tendenza alla melodia che rovina in parte “The last sentence”, senza la quale avrei ascoltato un buon brano in pieno Slayer-style. Bocciata, inoltre, la veste grafica dell'album: tenebrosa e malvagia senza che il gruppo ne abbia bisogno. Onestamente, questa copertina poteva tranquillamente finire su di un disco Black Metal tipo Beherit o Watain, mentre invece per ciò che ho sentito da quest'album avrei ritenuto più consono un soggetto alla Toxic Holocaust, giusto per dare un'idea.
Insomma: i Violentor provano a seguire le orme del thrash più minimale e grezzo, ma alla fine falliscono in parte l'obiettivo perché oltre all'impatto iniziale e del grezzume schietto e diretto non propongono nient'altro. Se, come me, amate il thrash speed più violento e sbattuto in faccia, magari tipo Sodom, un ascolto a questi Violentor lo potete pure dare, ma non prima di averlo dato a gruppi dal genere correlabile ma migliori come WItchmaster, Inferno (norvegesi) o gli italiani Baphomet's Blood. |

| Well, midnight is coming right now and tomorrow I have to wake up early and go to work, and I just can't stop listening to this excellent album of Italian thrash metal attack. Somehow these bastards made a sound as if today is the last day of humanity, and there is only one thing to do: destroy all the fucking mankind by turning up the volume knobs and deliver dark vibes through venomous guitar riffs, and infernal lines into hard corish structures. Actually, this band has a high octane dose of speed metal combined with rotten hard core, and they really know how to manage corrosive metal riffs with no trends or false proposals. Definitely, they don't play the most original stuff I've heard lately but I have to admit that my neck started to move unwittingly since the first song to the last one. As aforementioned, they created some poisonous guitar riffs and also they have a very rotten stench of hard core music along the whole album, seems that they are huge fans of bands like Minor Threat, Conflict, and also early Slayer , early Exodus, etc. If those names sound familiar to you, don't hesitate to get this piece of sharp thrash metal from the new generation of bands coming from Europe. Her har vi Violentor, et italiensk thrash metal band med en gitarist som helt klart har hørt mye på punk og punkrock som Discharge, GHB og Ramones i sin ungdom. Jeg kan ikke huske å ha hørt så mye Discharge-riff siden........ ja, siden sist jeg hørte på «Hear Nothing...» skiva. Riffene er kjappere enn hva Bones leverte (og leverer) og sånn sett kan det forsvares å kalle dette thrash metal. Men det er mye punk i riffene og i trommene, derfor kunne man kanskje kalt dette thrash-punk (?). Eller rock 'n roll, for det er det det egentlig er.
Det svinger godt av låtene, det skal bandet ha. Men jeg synes ikke dette er all verden, bortsett fra at de gir meg lyst til å finne fram no gammal Discharge. |

Tweede album voor de Italiaanse thrashformatie Violentor die zich ook laat inspireren door hardcore, punk en speed metal. Originaliteit is ook hier geen prioriteit, integendeel, herkenbaarheid troef.
Niet alleen herkenbaarheid staat hoog aangeschreven bij deze thrashers, ook hun voorliefde voor punk en hardcore komt zwaar doorsijpelen in alle aspecten van de muziek. Motörhead , The Exploited , Discarge ... de Britse invloed is overduidelijk aanwezig in deze blend van hardcore punk en thrash metal. Zowel tekstueel als qua (D-beat en breaks) drumpatronen, punkriffs ( Free Spree is wel extreem duidelijk punkgericht) als opbouw wordt er naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk gekeken en gekopieerd, weliswaar met veel respect voor de grondstoffen en zonder pretentie in de uitvoering. Fans van reeds gemelde bands kunnen een poging wagen, ook liefhebbers van oude Exciter mogen van mij part hun gang gaan met dit Rot .

There is much debate to where Thrash Metal began and arguments can be made to a multitude of bands including VENOM, MOTORHEAD, and even METALLICA. For the Italian Thrashers VIOLENTOR and their sophomore record “Rot,” the source influence of the album is most definitely MOTORHEAD. Actually, there is quite a bit of that older MOTORHEAD sound embedded in the rambunctious ramblings of this modern Thrash act…just a little bit harsher and a tad bit faster.
Don't be mistaken by that comment though. I mean no ill will to either act. In fact, “Rot” is a pretty fun album even if it struggles to be more memorable than that. The energy of the band's Thrash N Roll riffing, drum work, and harsh snarling vocals makes for a rather infectious record of raw unbridled productions and writing. Although it might not be much, but the charm of how fun “Rot” is makes up for many of its issues.
VIOLENTOR takes a rather rough and tumble approach to the entire thing with a very old school sounding production and mix that perfectly compliments the style of writing. The rompous Thrash riffing certainly sets a foundation for the rest on tracks like “Fuck The World” that best combines it with the Rock N Roll drum style and occasionally audible bass work, while the slower mid tempo album closer “Stand” has an almost BLACK SABBATH vibe to song. After finally listening to the aforementioned song, I was shocked that VIOLENTOR didn't use that to their benefit more often as it worked quite well to break up the monotony of their tried and true style that covers the rest of “Rot.” It might have helped the rest not blend in together so much if they had thrown one more song of that caliber in earlier.
“Rot” might not be as strong of an album as many of VIOLENTOR's brethren from Italy, but that doesn't stop this MOTORHEAD sounding band from producing a fun and energetic recording. It suffers from being too much of the same at times and has trouble rising above itself to be truly memorable, but “Rot” is not a bad way to start off for the Italian Thrashers and I had my fun with it. |

A simple minded look about the negativities of life, the need to head up against the power of society and piss on their grandeur, isn't that some of the aspects of defiance? And why not I ask, as a plural worldwide society, which most of it is free speech oriented, there is a kind of hatred, or better stated, harsh commentary, and about what is going on right in front of our eyes that many choose to recognize as grey spots unimportant. Well some of us do. I don't know if VIOLENTOR , them being both a Thrash and a Punk band, have been busy on being the critics of modern civilization, but they surely meant business with their provocation and trouble free music. With their second album, “Rot” , via EBM Records , the Italians slackers ride the winds of MOTORHEAD , but slightly a bit rougher and speedier than the British beast.
Going over this album there certainly nothing new, simply a band trying to catch one of the many drifts of the late 80s currents and run through it without taking a tumble. VIOLENTOR wrote music for “Rot” as Metalized Punkheads with certain amount of rawness to keep them company. The catchy rhythms are speedy, easy to manifest, with energetic riffing, mostly power chord driven, with a very few of NWOBHM type melodies, licks and customary soloing. Vocally, the Dog thuds with the same raspy tone, very much the same of how Lemmy used to sound and bark back in the old days, a hungry British dog gone Italian. Sound wise, it is everything that an 80s fan can think about, something in the range of mid to late 80s efforts but with a foretaste of crudeness to match the band's musical direction.
Though nothing is mind blowing, this album is rather fun to listen to. If one will take care to ease his ears with less complexity and more straightforward action, “Rot” will answer those needs. “Free Spree” is the greatest example of the smooth fusion of Punk and Metal. It just runs along without stopping, always attacking with ferocity, barking a piece of chorus, hit another crumb of guitar soloing, gorging with reoccurring riffing. Although I am not a fan of Punk, at least not that much, it served its purpose and made me a fan. “Rot” , “Daemonical Tutor” and “Breath of Hate” deliver the same type of goods, nothing too threadbare or highly accurate, the latter being heavier than the other chose few, like a black blister. “The Last Sentence” , the final blow on the head, is also the band's true Metal conception, a bit dark and mysterious, post NWOBHM rupturing speed with heavy riffing and a chilling atmosphere for something that has been Punk oriented. In the end, a bit more than your solid crossover, I suggest on taking a bite of this record. |

I got a taste of these Italian blackened thrash punx last year with the release of their s/t debut which was phenomenal! Their style lies somewhere in-between the blurred lines of edgy metal tinged crust and straight up bay inspired thrash.
This album immediately grabs my attention right out of the gates with a super fast barrage of crunch, blast beats and crust style shouts of aggression. Hints of Wolf Brigade and Lemmy's speed induced madness abound, with an intenseness that doesn't let up until the last note rips all the skin from your face and you're left there pummeled, wanting more!
The album reminds me of what early thrash was like, a bunch of hyper, punk influenced metalheads looking to kick it up a few notches from Venom and Discharge, there is a rawness to it while maintaining a tight and seriously heavy sound; keeping it all about the rhythm without getting lost in overly complex leads and clumsy changes.
If you're into undeniably ruthless velocity, then this album is the thing for you! Just be sure to not trash your place as you go moshing about your pad like a madman (woman)! |

Il progetto Violentor è nato all'inizio del 2009 (a Lucca) con l'intenzione di riprodurre su disco un suono grezzo che metta in evidenza l'impatto generato on stage e ispirandosi al metal old school e al punk/crust degli anni '80. Sono già passati due anni dal primo ed omonimo album dei toscani Violentor ed ecco che mi ritrovo tra le mani il secondo album (“Rot” : marciume) uscito per la messicana EBM Records. La band si presenta così: “Le nove songs di Rot non si arrendono mai, è una battaglia feroce, dall'inizio alla fine. Riff brutali, percussioni e basso devastanti, mescolato ad una voce infetta ed insana”. Ecco, con queste parole potrei chiudere la mia recensione! Hanno detto tutto loro in poche parole. Ma non lo faccio… perché quando si è davanti ad un buon disco, è giusto encomiare e parlarne (alla faccia di chi si spaccia per qualcos'altro)! Diciamo subito che già dal primo ascolto vi sembrerà di trovarvi davanti ad una spettacolare jam-session tra Motorhead e Sodom (o Venom, o Slayer…). Parlando con franchezza, i Violentor non “inventano” nulla di nuovo (ma a chi interessa?), ma voglio complimentarmi con i singoli componenti per l'attitudine e passione che trasuda nei singoli brani, e non fa niente se la voce di Dog brano dopo brano è sempre più vicina a quella di Lemmy Kilmister e non fa niente se la produzione è grezza e minimale, a me/noi questo genere piace così… cattivo, sporco (marcio - marciume - Rot)! Alle “sporche” parole usate per descrivere “Rot”, aggiungete anche una buona dose di hardcore, proprio quello più vicino al punk/crust degli anni '80. I brani sono sontuosi, con rallentamenti e pochi spazi alle melodie; sono carichi di adrenalina e rabbia, un vero pugno nello stomaco! Anche la copertina, nera, celebra il “marciume” sonoro della band. Per il sottoscritto, siamo di fronte ad una delle migliori realtà (emergenti) della scena italiana! Comprate a scatola chiusa e lasciatevi trasportare dal thrash… come? Non ho citato nessuna canzone? Certo. L'album va comprato a scatola chiusa, l'ho detto! Occhio, la band è in giro per promuovere il disco, approfittatene!

Desde la ciudad de Lucca (perteneciente a la región italiana de la Toscana) y a ritmo de Speed / Thrash Metal el integrante Alessio Medici nos presenta a Violentor con su segundo disco.
Dice su biografía que nacieron como proyecto a comienzos de 2009, inspirándose en el Metal de la vieja escuela y en el Punk / Crust de los 80. “Violentor”, su primer álbum, fue al principio auto-editado por la propia banda en 2010, para luego ser editado en 2011 por Metal Throne Productions en cassette en una edición limitada de 50 copias numeradas a mano, y meses después publicarlo en CD los mexicanos de EBM Records. Siendo en marzo de 2012 vuelto a re-editar en formato cassette de tan sólo 100 copias. En ese primer lanzamiento la banda estaba integrada por: el guitarra / voz Alessio “Dog” Medici, la guitarrista Betta, el bajista / voces Riccardo “Rot” Orsi (Devastator), y el batería Alessandro Rashade “Rasha” (The Archetype, ex-Adrenocromo).
Ahora en formación de trío (ya sin la fémina a las seis cuerdas), de nuevo bajo etiqueta EBM Records , publican su segundo álbum, “Rot”. Un disco que contiene nueve agresivos, rabiosos y sucios temas de un Speed / Thrash Metal, también con influencias del Punk, prácticamente a piñón fijo durante todas las canciones. Quedando bien escuchar unas pocas en pequeñas dosis, porque si llegamos a escuchar del tirón el disco (que dura poco más de treinta y cinco minutos), puede llegar a resultar un tanto monótona y demasiado homogénea su completa escucha.
La voz “rota” del guitarrista Alessio “Dog” me trae recuerdos de la voz de nuestro querido Mike “Leprosy” (Iron Curtain), y por consecuente a la de Lemmy (Motörhead), Cronos (Venom)…. Pudiendo disfrutar de la energía, adrenalina a saco, y de la repetición a piñón riffera y rítmica, que desprenden durante la inicial “Rot”, “Better Dead Than Slave”, “Voodoo” y “Daemonical Tutor”.
Otros temas como “Free Spree” (comenzada por el bajo de Rot, al igual que el último corte, “The Last Sentence”), “Rabid Dog”, “Fuck The World”… si los escuchas sueltos, o en pequeñas ráfagas, también te pueden llevar a realizar incesantes meneos de cabeza y que los huesos y articulaciones del cuerpo se te desencajen siguiendo la velocidad que imprimen, aunque, como dije anteriormente, resultan muy repetitivos en sus ritmos a toda pastilla.
En “Breath Of Hate” incluyen un pasaje instrumental más reposado y heavy metalero previo al veloz solo de guitarra por obra del invitado Damiano “Idda” Porciani (de los heavy metaleros Frozen Tears).
Para cerrar el CD dejan la composición menos veloz de todo el trabajo, “The Last Sentence”, con un ritmo pausado y marcado, aunque en la recta final suben durante un momento de revoluciones.
Violentor es otro grupo que ha surgido en la última década rememorando el sonido de la vieja escuela y del más clásico Speed / Thrash Metal, al igual que otras muchas bandas del mundo, y más en concreto de su país, Italia, como Ancient Dome, Amethyst, Baphomet´s Blood, Endovein, National Suicide, Mad Maze, y un largo etcétera. Ante tantísima oferta eres tú quien decide quien merece la pena o no. |
| New Wave of Thrash Metal |
Italy's gutterpunk thrashers VIOLENTOR created a debut album that still holds a high spot on my music-listening rotation. The self-titled album's furious mix of distorted riffs and venomous vocals are both searingly intense and catchy as hell.
With their second album, Violentor hits the ground running with the title track ROT . Right away you can feel that adrenaline kick in and be comforted that Violentor picks up right where they left us on their debut with a high-octane punk/thrash attack. Why change up the formula if it works so damn well?
Songs like and Free Spree and Daemonical Tutor are blistering pieces of work that bring to mind The Exploited type of riffage - except they take those riffs, push them down in a dirty ally, and kick them around until they are all bruised, bloodied, and full of grit and grime. In turn, those riffs do the same thing to the listener, like a twisted pay-it-forward scheme.
The song Breath of Hate offers a bit more to Violentor's arsenal with a rather slow and foreboding mid-section, offering a nice dynamic. The album closer The Last Sentence is a slow grinder, nearly balancing out the non-stop barrage of balls-out attitude emanating from the previous tracks.
Rot is an all-together mass of kick-ass insanity. I just love how Violentor can make ugly music a thing of beauty. |
